The Housing Crisis

Access to housing for all is essential to the security, health, wellbeing, and prosperity of our communities. Too many local families are struggling to make ends meet—where housing is the single biggest household expense in Hawaiʻi and  makes up 38% of household spending  for our local people. This has cemented Hawaiʻi’s place as the state with the highest cost of living in the country.

Governor Green has  five data-driven priorities to build a more affordable future for local residents:

  1. Expanding affordable housing inventory
  2. Maintaining existing affordable units
  3. Offering more housing support to local residents
  4. Coordinating and modernizing Hawaiʻi’s housing development process
  5. Communicating the urgency of the housing crisis
